FAQ

How will we keep each other safe while doing in-person yoga?

Ti is fully vaccinated. For now, only fully vaccinated people will be allowed in classes. Everyone will need to show Ti their vaccine card. (Or send a picture anytime. The picture will be deleted but record of having seen it will be kept). This is an uncomfortable requirement, but for the feeling of safety of everyone involved, this is the way we can meet in person for now. Read more details about in-person yoga on Ti’s Blog.

If you feel sick at all, please just stay home for the good of the community.

Where should I park near Yoga Shala Carrboro?

There is almost no parking at the building (maybe 8 spaces for the whole building). If there are not spaces there, please park at the free and close Carrboro public parking lots either on Laurel St a little down from the Farmer’s Market or on Weaver St. between The Wellness Alliance and Sparrow & Sons Plumbing. DON’T PARK AT AUTO LOGIC when they are open!

How can I cultivate good energy doing yoga at home?

I generally encourage if at all possible don’t have your yoga space be in your bedroom, which as you know has the energy of sleep there more strongly than other locations, and in yoga, of course, we are trying to Wake Up! If you use an office space or space where there’s a computer or TV, covering those screens with something pretty at least for your practice time can make a surprisingly big difference in the quality of your practice. Appropriate lighting also can help create an ambience if you are practicing in the evening.

How does a by Donation studio work?

The donation requested is $10-20 per class; this IS NOT a cost! Please give what you can, whether on this scale or not. Money should never prevent anyone from coming as much as they want, and no one is ever turned away for financial reasons. From the blog: thoughts on donation yoga

How does being a Go Deep Member work?

Membership simply means you’ve signed the waiver. Once you’ve signed the waiver, you’ll get a password to get you into the studio where you will find the Zoom meeting links. You’ll also get the passcode for all of the Zoom classes. I recommend that you try to put your mat down on the ground and sit for a few minutes before class begins to center yourself.

But…Yoga with my phone?

If you are joining on Zoom, you are, of course, using an electronic communication device. Remember, whatever the device, don’t answer any calls or texts or emails or whatever during your practice time; don’t check the news or stocks or whatever; no social media. You know. For that time, your device is just a “yoga prop,” nothing more, and is to be used ONLY for that purpose. You may know what I mean.

Some Sacred Concepts

September 11 (an interesting start date this particular blog)-16, 2022 “Reality is more sacred to me than my most sacred concept.” -Amrit Desai It would be nice if we could all say what Amrit Desai said and mean it. We would have a much better human condition on the...

Everything Is Already OK?

August 3-17, 2022 “Everything is OK, things are already alright. Nothing to change. Nothing to improve. Just relax.” -from Yoga and the Quest for the True Self by Stephen Cope On page 92 of that text, Cope, one of my first Yoga teachers (who was initially a...

Namaste?

June 20-27, 2022 Belated Happy International Day of Yoga (Summer Solstice, June 21). It seems appropriate to be working on this particular blog at this time in the calendar. Some of you may have noticed that I stopped saying, “Namaste” at the end of my classes a few...

Why Involve Ourselves in Physical Yoga?

May 15-20, 2022 I’ve gotten variations on this question several times over the past month or so, so it appears that this is the thing to write about. In classes, I was recently reading the chapter entitled “You Are Not Who You Appear to Be” from Stephen Cope’s Yoga...

Death, Part Two

DEATH, PART TWOApril 17, 2022 “Mrityorma Amritam Gamaya.—Lead us from death to immortality” is part of a traditional Sanskrit prayer chanted across Indian traditions. (The full prayer is written on the front wall in the Yoga Shala.) This blog follows Death, Part One....

Death, Part One

DeathFebruary 22 (2/22/22)-March 2, 2022 “Good for him.” -Ti Please don’t read this blog if you are uncomfortable with the fact of death. Seriously. What follows is not meant to be “touchy-feely” or “feel good” kind of stuff. Just real and in some cases, brutally...

Thay Left His Physical Body

January 22-26, 2022 One of my earliest teachers and influences on the Path, Thich Nhat Hanh, left left his physical body last Friday, January 21. He was 95. He had returned to Vietnam a few years ago to die, as I understood it. I had been expecting to hear this news...

Yoga On the Mat Is Getting Harder

December 16-17, 2021 One woman recently commented that the bow pose was pretty easy for her, and I said that sometimes we can easily get to the bony limitations in the poses, though the number of those poses for me are becoming fewer and fewer. A long time student and...

Yoga is Stressful … OR Yoga as Stress-Reduction

October 28-November 1, 2021 “Yoga is stressful.”“Yoga is stressful?”“At least the way that you do it!” -a piece of my inner dialogue during my asana practice this morning A little later, I read this tidbit: “I tell students who are studying to be teachers, ‘Don’t be a...

“I Want…”

July 7-22, 2021 I suggested and helped give a particular hip-shift to a student in the on-the-back twist in class earlier in the month. After she was in the pose for a little while after that, she said, “So you want this hip to move back?” After thinking for a moment,...
